Financial Principles

When making any investment decisions in today’s uncertain climate, you MUST have a Financial Plan where the following financial principles should be followed:

  • you should have appropriate risk investments;
  • you want the highest returns possible commensurate with your level of safety;
  • you want maximum flexibility;
  • you want to minimise your tax.

In order to obtain high rates of return and relative safety, you need to spread your risk - Diversification. You can spread your risk as follows:

  • geographically with money invested in New Zealand and money invested off shore;
  • by using different fund managers;
  • by investing in different investment areas such as fixed securities, property, shares, and bonds.

Please note that you can obtain capital gains and capital losses by investing into shares, fixed interest investments, property and managed funds.

Risk Profile

When making these investment recommendations, an assumption has been made that you are a conservate/balanced/agressive risk profile. This has been based on the following criteria:

  1. going through the personal risk profiler with you in the consultation;
  2. having completed the personal risk profiler with you at previous consultations;
  3. taking cognisance of your age, debt level, family situation and income flow.

Asset Allocation

The bulk of investment performance is based on asset allocation as opposed to purely fund selection. We obviously use our best endeavours to attempt to select the fund managers who will consistently perform in the top 25% of funds relative to their competitors but there is obviously no guarantee that the funds selected today will remain in that category in the future. Funds require constant monitoring in case changes need to be made. Therefore, asset allocation is vitally important to the future continued good performance of your investment portfolio.
